All About Volume.

I’m always experimenting with new ways of doing my hair. After a recent coloring at Cinta in San Francisco, the girl who blew dry my hair did an excellent job. She was able to create a ton of volume in my hair by simply wrapping the hair into imaginary rollers and pinning the hair in…

Jennfier - Oh yeah. I definitely have a favorite way to do my hair and other people’s if they let me. I can’t remember how I figured out how to do it. It might have been a magazine or just playing around.
Anyway, I like slightly curly hair, no more wavy but with a bit of bounce. (I have fairly straight hair.) I like it wavy all the way from almost the roots to the tips. It gives me some body but I don’t look like Shirley Temple on crack.
What I like to do is use a one inch curling iron and I start at the top of my head near my bangs and I wrap my hair (I have long hair past my shoulders) around the barrel of the iron as close to my roots as I can get without burning myself. I let it heat for 5-10 seconds. Then I release it. By wrapping all of your hair around the iron instead of starting at the bottom and working your way up you heat all of the hair at the same time and at the same temp thereby creating a “balanced” curl.
Once I’m done with each section then I finger-comb it to release the curl. What I get is a looser-wave curl, not shaggy or limp but bouncy and fun. Kind of celebrity almost. Fun.

Melinda - Thanks Jessica for answering my question. Your hair always looks fabulous. I am going to order that curling iron cone right away.
Anne Camille–I, too, have long thick hair (and young children). I’ve been thinking about going back to rollers. It does seem so old school, but I have a girlfriend who swears by them. I’ll go with whatever works.

Anne-Camille Collins - Omigosh!!! I just have to tell you that I’ve been wanting to ask the “how do you do your hair” question for awhile now!!! So glad someone beat me to it! Your hair is amazing!
I know that it probably sounds old-school, but I use rollers a lot. I blow dry it straight and then put six large rollers in my hair… leave them in for about 2 minutes and then pull them out. Because I don’t leave them in for a long time it doesn’t give me huge curls… just adds more volume. Having three kids I had to come up with some super fast way to do my thick hair. It works for me!
I’m going to try your new tip soon.

Fashion Challenge.

Received a comment from Karen that read… We are heading to Vegas for some fun and I look forward to being the exception to the rule in Vegas by looking stylish. Have you been to the show Zumanity? It is a "spicy" show and I am finalizing what to wear…would love your ideas. I have…

Carrie - That middle one is to die for! Gorgeous.

Mark Pattison - Zumanity is very sexual and red is a great color choice. Go to the show thinking that you are part of the act and play a sensual/seductive gal. The actors will love the participation and you will appreciate the show much more. Plus, what happens in Vegas…. stays in Vegas!

Lacy - Karen,
I have been to see Zumanity! Sit in the front row if you can! The pre show is a lot of fun and they play with people in the audience! You could also get picked to go up on stage! Show some cleavage, they will adore you! have fun!
I love the dress selections, Jessica!

tammy t - Love these looks…so very perfect for the show….and what a laugh at all the guys and their thoughts!
And Jessica, your ponytail today ROCKS! Love it!
t

jessica - Hi Karen,
I love the idea of you in red and the man in black! I think that will look great. Here are a couple more red wrap options – in case you don’t find anything at the mall!

This has a similar look to the wrap – without the belt.

You’ll have to send me a picture from the night out. I’d love to see it!
Jessica

karenconnollylarson - Red it is!
Thanks for taking the time to help me out Jessica! I was going for black but love the idea of RED! It is my favorite color actually and I never seem to wear it. I am a brunette with long hair and ivory skin and this will be “perfect”. I think the wrap dress with deep v-neck style for me (it is sold out online already). I own red peep toes and also a silver strappy sandal that is beautifully jeweled at the clasp. I will have to take them both with me, I live in Minneapolis so I will head to the Mall of America to see what is out there in this style. Thanks for the inspiration. I will have my man wear the black instead!
What a sinful treat!
My husband has the same outlook your Jeffrey does it seems.
Cheers!

Gwen - Your fashion choice today is gorgeous! Just thought I’d share!

Monica Ferri - Jessica,
This info. is so invaluable. I will be passing your site on to some friends and family who would really appreciate your travel tips too.
Thank you for taking the time to put this together!

Jennifer O - How about a pair of Danskos? if you don’t own, they rock. went to italy a few years back and i wore them every day. i had a black pair of mary jane style that were fine with jeans for the day, and could be cute with tights inthe evening if needed. they are around$100….try danskooutlet.com if you know what size you need. that could be your one pair of shoes and you wouldn’t need tennis shoes (which are sooo touristy lookking). good luck.

Jennifer - I flew to Frankfurt, Germany and travelled all over the country. It was awesome! An eye-opener. Something I’ll never forget. I found out two things that really helped me out.
1. Be very careful packing your lotions, shampoos, anything liquid that has to fly overseas. I had to pack detergent because I was staying for 6 weeks. Not exactly your situation but…it ended up getting all over a compartment of my suitcase. Luckily I had packed my panties in that compartment. I learned that double-bagging my detergent or shampoos would have helped. I did this on the way home and had no problem. Just be careful where you pack that if your suitcase is loaded down.
Also, make sure to leave room for souveniers and in my case the beautiful clothes and shoes that I purchased. You’ll find that europe is a couple years ahead of the U.S. in the fashion department. You can mail back a box of items you purchase but it can be very expensive.
Second, I brought with me a journal. A fresh, spiral-bound journal that I wrote in every single day and sometimes, when I needed a break from the miles of street-walking I put on my feet, during the day at a cozy bistro. A good spot for a light snack or coffee. That journal has been the best souvenier ever and the cheapest too. I will read it occassionally when I have the time and remember all of the details of my trip again. Things I had forgotten, impressions I made and wrote down. It has helped me relived one of the best vacations of my life.
Those are the two things that I suggest you do. The first one is very important because you don’t want to get in a situation where your limited amount of clothing or your toiletry items are covered in liquid or lotion. It’s a big waste of time to have to deal with it.
So, hopefully that helps you. :) Have fun I envy you!

Mary - Jessica, this is the best packing advice I have ever read, and I’ve read a lot of articles on packing over the years. Very realistic take on being travel chic. You put so much care and intelligence into your answers… these are the reasons I keep coming back to your blog. Keep up the amazing work! I’m off to check a bunch of your links.

Lacy - Ohh can’t wait to buy some of your fav undies! Mine are: the Mary Green Silk Knit Thong, they are fabulous! Super comfy, no “denting” into the hips and no panty line! They run grab bag sales online from time to time. It is a fun way to refresh and get some crazy colors that you might not usually pick for yourself. http://www.marygreen.com/products/productdetail.asp?PID=L18
Loving your travel advise!

Amy - I’m in agreement with amy (I’m a different Amy)–but if I have a “good hair day” and the familiar, comforting scents, it makes the trip more relaxing for me. I don’t skimp and buy a travel-size product that I’ve never tried or even chance it with the hotel ones because as I’ve found through experience, sometimes it won’t work the same or my skin will have a reaction. Just stick with what you know & love, even in this situation. Lastly, adorable picture today. Were you on a ferry boat? So cute.

amy - in addition to my travel pillow, clothes, shoes, etc I always take my favorite shampoo/conditioner, and scented body lotion. If I feel good about my hair (even if it’s up in a ponytail) & I have my signature scent (& don’t have to worry about liquid perfume), I feel like I’m off to a great start.

sara - Hmmmmm….I was just thinking about what my “must bring” travel item would have to be…and I have to say—the first thing that came to my mind was MY HUSBAND! I could make do with whatever as long as he was with me. Corny but true!
Reading your posts always makes me want to travel!!
Hope you have fun Alison!
PS.. Today’s picture is the cutest. How funny that you already had a clutch! I bet your little backpack was meticulously packed for the first day of school.

julie - umm, that picture of you as a little girl in the outfit of the day is ADORABLE!! you would have beautiful children. :)

Amanda - First off my must bring is my pillow. It’s a habit my mom got me in from an early age. If I’m going away for a night or 2 I might leave it home but on a long trip it goes.
For shoes, I bought 2 good pairs of flip flops before I went to Europe this past May. I’m a flip flop girl plus I have a hard time finding shoes that don’t make my feet hurt after a couple hours. I got a pair from Clarks and a pair of Crocs. They might not be the most fashionable but they were comfy.
I wore lots of jeans and tshirts. We also went from London to Rome and definatly noticaed a temp difference. Bring skirts for Rome.
A just a tip about Nice, make sure to visit Cannes. That’s where we stayed and I liked it a lot better than Nice. It was less congested. Also visit a perfume factory while you’re down there. We went to Fragonard in Grasse.

Uplift yourself.

In a bad mood? Not feeling well? Fashion can be your friend. Take a shower and try on something delightful. Or put on fun shoes. Or a great dress. Or a new lipstick. It’s an instant mood lifter!

jessica - Hi Karen!
Here’s a link to the post I just wrote about ideas for what to wear to Zumanity.

I hope you have a delightful time!
Jessica

jessica - HI Sara,
I haven’t read that book yet. But I’ve heard so, so many great things about it. What was your favorite part about reading it? I’ve got a couple beach stops coming up and I’m planning to pick it up.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Jessica

karenconnollylarson - Fashion is fun and contagious!
This photo is timeless…you could have been photographed any time within the last 60 years. love that! Your beauty shines through in this shot, it screams “I love life and enjoy being me”!
Thanks for sharing your fashion views, you have such a fun spirit and I look forward to how you pull it all together, Yes I admit that I am a bit of a copycat! We are heading to Vegas for some fun and I look forward to being the exception to the rule in Vegas and look Stylish.
Have you been to the show Zumanity in Vegas? It is a “spicy” show and I am finalizing what to wear…would love your ideas.
Thanks again for the inspiration Jessica. I am so glad I found your blog through your sister Ali, what great sisters you are. I have 3 sisters and know how great it is to have “sister” love.

sara - I know, I know..I already posted a comment on this post–but now I am commenting of the fashion choice of the day. 2/16 is very my style and I love, love it….problem is…I need to drop about 20+ pounds to look like that in it. How can I lose weight when I HATE vegetables and going to the gym at this point (w/new infant) is rather tough! Oh, blah! I am Debbie Downer this evening!
I also wanted to ask if you have thought of reading Eat, Pray, Love? I think you might really like it.

Nancy Doren - dude, the hair, the hair! AwesomE! am loving your blog.

kelly - holy gorgeous!!!
you look so darn pretty and i love how your hair goes with the print in the background :)

Carrie - :) Amazing photo, Jess.

tammy t - I so agree on the mood lifter! When I feel under the weather or down I try and wear things with color and funk and it helps so much.
That photo is amazing. Gorgeous!
t

alexandra - Seriously loving the photo of you – fabulous!
Thanks for the advice for mood lifting! My best friend always told me to polish my toe-nails whenever I felt down – that works too!

sara - Love this photograph, Jessica! Very fun and chic!

Danielle - Love that photo! Thanks for the inspiration (as always) today!

Jeanette - What an incredibly sophisticated yet playful photo of yourself. And can I say how much I love the vibrant background!
Fashion is definitely a great friend. When I’m wearing something I like, it immediately gives me a mood-booster.
Thanks for the fun thoughts and motivation.

Yellow.

Do you take color risks in your fashion choices? From everything I had previously read, yellow was not a color for me. But last year, I decided to take a risk and buy a hot yellow shirt. I’ve loved the color since. My suggestion is to incorporate a new color in a small way. Maybe…

Alexandra - Me again!!
Suddenly I’m feeling cool about being a catholic-school mom!
Can’t wait to go shoe shopping – thanks, Jessica!

jessica - Hi Vera,
Thanks for visiting! Harris Teeter…what a fun place! Have you been to EarthFare? That’s my favorite grocery store!
Here are some great around town, Catholic-school mom shoe suggestions – I love the small wedge for a little lift and glamour under a great fitting jean that just skims above the ground!
Clean and classy…

These look fun AND comfortable – love the yellow!

If you’re gonna go with flip flops – keep them on the fancier end – and stop for a pedicure before the carpool pick up!

And the espadrilles are great for skirts.

If you go to Nordstrom in Charlotte, they’re having a Linea Paolo preview event that has lots of fun shoes at reasonable prices in happy colors! Ask for Allen, he’s a great helper!
Cheers!
Jessica

Vera - Love your blog. Lots of fun to read. Just today, they had a model wearing bright yellow pumps on the Today Show.
Can you recommend a good source of wear-around-town-to-the-Harris-Teeter-preschool-and-Catholic-school-carpool shoes? (I live in Charlotte)
I’m a busy mom, but I’d like to infuse my wardrobe with some key pieces. Thanks for the inspiration!

Alexandra - I’m about to over-haul my closet and wardrobe. Things have been looking rather sad lately -lots of black, navy, grey etc.. I want to try to incorporate more hits of colour but I’m always a little hesitant.
Your post is a timely reminder to go for it. Thanks, Jessica!!

tammy t - Yum….color! I am loving color and I guess I have for a while. Green has already been a favorite, and of course after seeing what J.Crew was doing with color I have added a bunch more punches of it.
Love the shoes! I can hear the shoe song by “Kelly” in my head right now!
t

Ksea Cantonwine - Hey Ali… saw on your blog that you had on a nice blouse and/or sweater from J Crew in one of your pics. I believe they called that color “flame”. It looked good on you, girl! Did the shoes you mentioned in your comments were from J Crew, also?
YOU GO GIRL! You have never been one to shy away from any color, Ali!

Ali - You would be so proud of the orange patent pumps I wore at the last trade show :) .

Amy - Yes, absolutely–my favorite way is with my shoes. And as a side note to Lindsay, break out the orange hobo!! For one thing, it sounds gorgeous (I want to say delicious) and it’s fun! Have some fun this bleak winter!

perfect bound - yellow is certainly not the color for my complexion either but I can certainly see these on my feet or around my house.

Lindsay - i wouldnt say i take risks, per se, but i am starting to incorporate bursts of bright color into my mostly-black and gray wardrobe. i just bought a bright orange oversized hobo – my husband kind of talked me into it. i was leaning more toward the black or a dark blue one, and he was like “i like the orange!” so i grabbed it. and i never do something impulsive like that! i havent used it yet, its still sitting in my closet. i kept the receipts telling myself ill just take it back if i never get brave enough to use it :)

jessica - Ksea,
I love that you keep the catalogs. I keep several of the catalogs that come from Neiman Marcus. They’re so well made. I know they’re going to be collectors items one day.
Cheers!
Jessica

jessica - Rebekah,
That article is ridiculously amazing.
Can you imagine wearing the same color every day?!
What color would you pick??
Jessica

sara - I never take risks with color! If I buy anything other thab=n black, white, grey,or brown…it collects dust! Wish I was more risky that way!

Ksea Cantonwine - J Crew has, in recent years anyway, used color in very interesting ways to perk up conservative attire. I have the past 6 months worth of catalogs and I have decided to keep them… permanently. I drool every single time I get a new catty. It’s delish!

Jessica Fulkerson - Are those Choos? I’m not normally a big color girl, but since starting a new job where my cuts / style must be very conservative, I’m drawn more to color as a way to infuse personality and life into suits and otherwise more somber pieces. Yellow is fabulous. I also love tomato red-orange, royal blue and deep plum.

Rebekah - and speaking of changing things up, though you’d appreciate this article:

Grey.

After many days on the road, it’s great to be home. Leaving tomorrow morning for more travel. With only about 24 hours at home, you’ve got to set your priorities of what to do with the time! The weather was beautiful in Charlotte today. I stopped to get a pedicure with my new GREY polish…

leslie - Jessica, I just recently found your blog and I LOVE it! I didn’t realize you lived in Charlotte. I also live in Charlotte and was wondering if you had any suggestions on where to go for a great mani/pedi. I have been here for 4 years and still haven’t found a nail salon like the one I love back home.

Grace C. - Jessica, I was wondering where you got the cute top in your 02.16.08 fashion choice. It is a must-have! Or if you know of any other alternatives available online?

Jeanette - Fabulous idea!

tammy t - I adore Watson Kennedy! Amazing store…very sweet owners. Did you catch them in Country Living magazine? Beautiful taste.
t

Ksea Cantonwine - I am loving grey right now. Good choice for the pedi!

jenn - lol love the signs … love them!
