I love this book. For reference. For ideas on how to eat better. For a reality check about your favorite restaurant and grocery store choices. And because the entire book has pictures!

Shopping.

Photograph by Yanick Dery. Illustration by Jacqueline Bissett. I received this question from Tracy: I’ve recently moved to Chicago, only steps from Michigan Ave, and am just waiting for my new job to start so I can have the needed cash to begin my shopping excursions. I’ve found so many stores here that I could…

kelly - jessica when you come to chicago, i definitely recommend visiting armitage street. an enjoyable place for shopping and browsing.

Carrie - WOW – that sketch (to go along with the photo) is so cool, Jess!

tammy t - I also pull apart magazines and file them to see if it something I “have” to have! If it still appeals I get myself to the store or shop it online. I’m trying to be an informed shopper and make better decisions about what works for me! And your website has lead to a lot of inspiration! Thank you!
t

Julie - When you come to Chicago for your girls weekend, you must check out the Chocolate Bar at the Peninsula Hotel. It’s only open on Friday and Saturday nights, but it is the definition of decadence. Chocolate in every imaginable form and flavor!! Reservations are a must…they are always busy!

Casey - I think the internet is great for bargain shopping, if you know the sizing of the particular store. The internet versions of stores often give additional discounts off of the clearance price, and I’ve gotten some very good quality pieces that I otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford.

sara - Ahhhhh..in some form or another, I am always shopping!! (Much to my husband’s dismay!)

Tara - Aww, that is my sister! :) I am going to visit her in Chicago the first week in April. We can’t wait to go shopping, even if only to look!

Ksea Cantonwine - I also peruse a lot on the internet. I look at Ebay for a lot of items (j crew, etc) because I normally have a hard time paying $100 for a merino sweater. LOL! I also like to go to Macy’s, etc when they have sales to find good deals. =)

Whirlwind.

Lots of life reflection going on in my mind. My mom asked me to help piece together a eulogy for my grandma’s funeral this weekend. It’s had me in deep thought of how to best capture the feelings that grandma inspired within me through her presence. It’s pretty difficult to capture and encompass the greatness…

Kyra - Wishing you peace within as you say farewell to your Grandmother. She sounds like such a lovely woman. ¥

tammy t - All the best to you while you spend time in reflection. And the shoe idea is the best…I think it’s wonderful to find a private yet outward way to remember a loved one.
And I hope you have a beautiful time with your extended family.
t

Anastasia - That’s a hard challenge, but from reading your blog over the past couples of months I’ve learned that you excel at conveying your thoughts to paper, something that is very hard for me to do. I love that you are paying homage to your Grandmother in your fashion choice.

julie - this is incredibly sweet. i love the idea of the shoes.

leslie - oh, i am so sorry about your grandma. it’s tough losing grandparents. i love that you are wearing a fun shoe in honour of her. so perfect.

Ksea Cantonwine - I love the idea of a fun shoe as a dedication. Respectful yet memorable at the same time.

Jeanette - I 2nd that….cheers to reflection and memories. I have no doubt you will do your grandma and family proud. :)

sara - Cheers … to reflection and memories!

South Beach.

Thank you to all who left such kindhearted comments and extended thoughts of sympathy in relation to the passing of my grandmother. I appreciate you! I’m leaving Miami today after a great weekend of relaxtion in South Beach at Delano Hotel, where you quickly learn to always keep your eyes open for the delights that…

Monica Ferri - How freakin’ cool is that! Enjoy!

Carrie - I love nice hotels. You’ve made me add this one to my list of places to visit.
Thinking of you…

sara - Ahhhhhh…The Delano seems amazing. I would quite like to enjoy a glass or three of Moet on one of those beds boasting a view of the stars!
I have an idea….how about a trip to the Delano as your next random give away?? What do you think? hahah

tammy t - And of course I have “If you wanna’ be my lover…” playing in my head for the rest of the day! What fun!
t

tammy t - Dang! So much fun! You have just added fuel to the fire of wanting to visit the Delano one day. Hope it was an oasis of rest for you!
t

Melanie - Hi Jessica,
I want to offer my sympathy regarding your grandma. It must be hard being so far away from your family at this time. Your tribute to her was lovely.
On a much lighter note, I was wondering if you could share who makes the dress you wore on 3.15.08 and also the trouser jeans you are wearing today? I love your outfit of the day feature!

A kiss goodbye.

When my mom, Pati, was gathering stories from the family and grandkids to read to my grandma as her health has dwindled over the last several weeks, one of the things I mentioned was that my grandma was the only family member I ever wanted to kiss on the lips. Several days after I emailed…

Totes I Love.

Here are some classy tote recommendations at various prices – as requested by Jeanette: Tote bags a great way to infuse color or patterns into an otherwise neutral outfit. They can hold a multitude of items. I use a tote to carry a pillow when traveling and it’s perfect that once I have the pillow…

lacy - KA-uuuute outfit today! Girl you look hot! I love that the contents of the bag are so very woman prepared for anything! It makes me think of Bree on Desperate housewives. My bag which is usually huge with a teeny tiny vintage cigarette case that I use as my wallet always has, planner, pen, lip gloss, lotion, my CAMERA, a few bobby pins and a pony tail holder to wrangle in my wily curls if the day has been LONG!

Jeanette - Tough choices here. They are all so very nice and classy. I typically carry some magazines, breath mints, and my lunch (if I’m headed to work) along with the newspaper.
Thanks for taking the time to seek these great totes. :)

Tracy - Call me old fashioned but pretty comparable. I always have a book with me and gloves, sunglasses, etc.
Btw, I am loving all the beautiful bags in the yellow/citron colors!

Hair Color Question.

Received this question from Sara… Can you give some thoughts on what you think about highlighted hair for brunettes? I have very dark hair but enjoy getting highlights to "brighten things up." What kind of highlights do you think look best? The very chunky ones that are clearly not natural looking seem to be popular…what…

Jessica Fulkerson - Love Rachel Bilson’s hair there. Not so much a fan of her bangs now… I personally think that hair is best when it doesn’t look obvious. Just like make-up: you can tell someone is wearing it, but it shouldn’t be your first thought when looking at them. The more obvious the haircolor, the less classy and chic it is to me… Good luck Sara!

sara - Thanks Jessica. My hair color looks similar to the first photo…so maybe I’m on the right track afterall!! I think I just need to make a point of getting to the salon each month…as it’s when I’m overdue that I start getting antsy and impulsive!
Thanks again for your advice. I will check out the products you mentioned.

Pennsylvania Dutch.

Jeffrey and I made the drive from Conshohocken, Pennsylvania to Lancaster, Pennsylvania yesterday. Since the majority of all trips I take involve very little car travel, it’s always fun to have the chance to travel by car, explore the life of the locals, and stop where you want. Lancaster, Pennsylvania is the Heart of Pennslyania…

stephanie - i wnet to school out there, millersville university. coming from philly, it was a big change.

Stephanie Wheeler - I actually grew up in rural West TN and had an Amish babysitter almost my whole childhood. They are great people!
(but I must say, riding in a horse and buggy sucks)

Monica Ferri - Jessica,
Both my paternal grandparents were Amish when they were young and when they got married they decided to not be Amish and go more liberal to a Mennonite Church. Later they turned non-denomational. I grew up in Lancaster Co. and went to high school at Lancaster Mennonite High which you probably passed on Rt. 30.
I did cringe a bit when you mentioned “chasing them down” HA HA but they are usually understanding.
My grandfather was 1 of 12 kids and so I still have relatives and 2nd cousins who are New Order Amish. If you have any specific questions that the website didn’t answer. Feel free to ask. Isn’t it heartwarming to be in Lanc.Co.? It sure makes you appreciate the simple beauty of nature, family and solitude.

sara - I, too, have traveled to Lancaster County. I was equally as enthralled by the whole idea of the Amish. Such a quiet, different life than the one I lead…but beautiful all the same.
I know you are busy, busy…but if you ever get a chance…grab a copy of the book Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult. It is a captivating suspense sort of story about a young Amish girl. I thoroughly enjoyed it! I would love to watch the movie that Sally suggested.
Glad you got to do something so fun…and by car, to boot! (I had to laugh that I was thinking the exact opposite of you…I do so much traveling by car, I’d love to switch places with you for a bit and climb on a plane…first class!)

tami - i just love amish country. my friends live in lancaster and have amish friends, it’s an interesting life style for sure. their foods are yummy too!

christina - haha. how funny! My husband is from around there [shrewsburry actually] and were heading out next week, how exciting! [me-being a big seattle city girl in a small town :/ ]

Sally - Wow, how funny is this, I just finished watching Saving Sarah Cain and then read your post!!! You must watch that movie it’s wonderful, all about a city girl who suddendly becomes the guardian for her sisters five Amish children – it’s such a wonderful story and set in Lancaster County – I highly recommend it.
Safe travels Jessica.

Amy - How fun! I grew up in OH, about 90 minutes from an Amish community. We used to go for the food :-) They had a yummy restaurant & bakery that made the drive totally worth it! One time we bought a little Amish doll – it didn’t have a face due to their beliefs.

jessica - Hi Jessica,
Thanks for the recommendation!
Jessica

Jessica - I am from a small town in Northern Indiana where part of our community is Amish. If you are ever in the South Bend area, you should make a trip to Shipshewana. It is a tourist town based around the Amish community. You can eat alot of Amish cooking and buy handmade products from the Amish. There is also a place called Menno Hof where you can go and learn about the history of the Amish. It is quite a neat little town, but it is starting to get a little to commercialized for my taste.
